🌎 Why we grow more together: expatriation, connection and the power of collective intelligence
We sometimes think that the more experienced we become, the less we need others.
After years of living abroad, navigating unfamiliar cultures, overcoming challenges and building a life in a different country, we may feel confident in our ability to handle whatever comes our way. We have learned to adapt, to find solutions and to move forward, even when things don't go as planned.
And yet, even the most experienced expatriates can benefit from a supportive community.
Not because they lack confidence or independence, but because being strong doesn't mean having to do everything alone.
👉 The paradox of independence
Expatriation often teaches us self-reliance. We learn to navigate unfamiliar environments, build new relationships and find our feet in situations where we cannot rely on the usual reference points.
These are valuable capabilities. But they can also lead us to believe that we should always be able to manage on our own.
We may underestimate the value of having a place where we can exchange ideas, share doubts, discover different perspectives or simply feel understood by people who have experienced similar challenges.
Support doesn't have to mean seeking help when something goes wrong. It can be a conscious choice to remain open to what other people can bring into our lives.
👉 We grow through the people around us
Think about a conversation that made you reconsider an assumption, a person who helped you see a situation differently, or a group that gave you the confidence to explore an opportunity you might otherwise have overlooked.
đź’ˇ Often, growth happens in these moments of interaction.
Other people bring experiences we haven't had, questions we haven't asked ourselves and perspectives we haven't considered. They can help us recognise our strengths, challenge our blind spots and imagine possibilities beyond our current horizon.
This is the power of collective intelligence: not simply gathering people together, but creating the conditions in which their different experiences and perspectives become a source of learning for everyone.
We don't have to agree on everything to benefit from one another. Sometimes, it is precisely our differences that help us grow.
👉 From expatriate communities to the workplace
This principle extends far beyond life abroad.
In organisations, too, individual expertise matters, but it is rarely enough on its own. Teams become stronger when people share knowledge, question assumptions, collaborate across differences and learn from one another.
The same is true of professional development. We may have considerable experience and a clear sense of direction, yet a conversation with someone outside our usual circle can open up an entirely new perspective.
Whether in an expatriate association, a professional community or a workplace, the underlying principle is the same: our individual capabilities can be amplified through meaningful connections with others.
👉 What if we focused more on what we gain?
Of course, connecting with others takes time and energy. Not every group is the right fit, and not every interaction will be meaningful. Building a supportive community requires openness, trust and a willingness to contribute as well as receive.
But when we find the right environment, the possibilities are considerable.
We can share knowledge, expand our networks, gain confidence, discover new opportunities and help others do the same. We can offer the perspective that someone else needs today and receive a different perspective when we need it tomorrow.
👉 Through my involvement with Amsterdam Accueil and Club Projet Pro, I see the value of creating spaces where people can connect, exchange experiences and learn from one another. These communities are not just about finding answers or solving immediate problems. They are also about creating the conditions in which people can develop, individually and collectively.
Perhaps the question is not whether we are capable of moving forward alone. Many of us are.
👉 Perhaps the more interesting question is: How much further could we go if we didn't always have to go alone?

đź’ˇ Because independence and connection are not opposites. We can be confident in our own abilities while remaining curious about what others have to offer.
And sometimes, the next step in our personal or professional growth begins not with doing more on our own, but with opening ourselves to the people around us.
